Saturday Sessions: Overload
Just one more newsletter
Happy Saturday!
I’ll use this recent shoutout as a jumping off point:
For two reasons…
To stroke my ego. (Give me this!)
Because the point is well made.
There’s SO So (so) much information out there about AI.
Hell, there’s even more not about AI but I am but one man. We need to focus a little!
There are two levels to this problems as far as I’m concerned:
Foundational knowledge.
Updates to knowledge.
First we need to build up a foundation. The basics. The frameworks.
Then we need to keep our knowledge up to date. What’s new? What’s important? What’s no longer relevant?
This is the same when learning any subject but it’s particular difficult with AI because of the velocity everything is moving. All the time. Everyday.
Hell, Anthropic just released yet another new model - Opus 4.8. And I haven’t even bothered to cover it (spoiler: it’s pretty good but expensive) because of the sheer volume and velocity of everything happening.
What’s the fix?
Most of us dive into a rushing river of new information. Social media, Twitter, newsletters. What’s new, what’s hot, what’s cool.
It feels good to be here. It’s exciting.
But without proper foundations all of this just washes over us. We’re always moving onto the next thing. The new release. The hotness. It’s thrilling for a while and then once overwhelm kicks in we disengage.
Instead it’s super important to build out a foundation first. Get some historical grounding in what’s happening. How these technologies work. Where we are (probably) heading with AI.
Knowing this stuff gives you discernment. The ability to know what’s actually important. And, importantly, what can be safely ignored.
I’ve put together a basic learners guide here: https://aiwithkyle.com/resources/ai-learning-guide
And if you want to go deep here’s the AI Canon: https://aiwithkyle.com/ai-canon
I’m not suggesting reading, watching and mastering all this material. Certainly not this weekend! (It’s too hot, go outside!)
But think about investing some time in laying down a foundation. So that it’s harder to get swept away by the new hotness every.single.week.
To the Task,
Kyle
