Prompt Playbook: Bootstrapping Growth Without Cash

Hey Prompt Entrepreneur,
OK. Money time!
We're getting into the big boy league now: paying other people to promote your product. This is where businesses start spending serious cash on growth - and where most of them go broke.
But we’re going to be smart. As always. We’re going to bootstrap.
Specifically we’ll use affiliate marketing. With this you only pay when you make money. Unlike Facebook ads where you pay upfront and hope (fingers crossed) for returns, affiliates only get paid when they drive actual sales. You never go negative. The money's already in your bank account before you pay out commissions.
What is this wizardry? We only pay from realised revenue. The customer pays you £100, you pay your affiliate £30, you keep £70. Solid.
Let's get started:
Summary
Affiliate marketing
Affiliate vs referral
Micro-influencer targeting
What to pay affiliates
Technical implementation
Partner resource creation
What Affiliate Marketing Actually Is
First let’s clarify. As people get this mixed up.
Earlier in the week we covered referral marketing. Now we’re covering affiliate. These are not the same thing!
Affiliate marketing is paying other people to promote your product, but only when they successfully drive sales. Think Amazon Associates - millions of people have Amazon affiliate links, and Amazon only pays when someone actually buys something through those links.
Here's how it works: You give someone a special tracking link. They share it with their audience. When someone clicks that link and makes a purchase, the affiliate gets a commission. No sale, no payment. It's performance-based marketing.
Affiliate vs Referral Confusion: People often mix these up, but they're different animals. Referrals are your existing customers sharing because they love your product - you reward them as a thank you. Affiliates are typically strangers who see a business opportunity - they actively promote you to earn commissions. They don’t necessarily care about (or even use!) your product. They are in the business of affiliating.
Referrals are grateful fans. Affiliates are business partners.
Confusion arises because sometimes these programmes get conflated. Or sometimes you may have people who are referrers who become affiliates. Or vice-versa.
Our Plan: Micro-Influencers
So, we know that affiliates are people who want to make money by promoting your product to their audiences. Cool. So obviously we go straight to the people with the largest audiences right?
Seems sensible- but it rarely works. This is because people with audiences in the 10s, 100s of thousands or millions get paid directly. A brand will come to them and cut a deal for cash.
At that scale the content creators have that leverage. Each deal is worth $1000s or 10s of $1000s. They get the cheque, shoot a 30 second video and hit publish. Easy money.
So when a small new tool comes to them and say “hey I’ll give you 30% of my $10/subscription” if you promote it understand that this isn’t very attractive to larger creators. It’s nothing personal - it’s just the maths doesn’t stack up!
To make the same $10,000 they’ll have to send over 3333 paying subs…a big challenge and a commitment. Much easier to make that 30 second vid and collect a quick cheque.
So instead we’ll target micro-influencers with 1K-10K followers, not mega-influencers with hundreds of thousands plus. Here's why this strategy works:
Accessibility - They actually respond to messages. Mega-influencers have agents and minimum spends. A productivity coach with 3K followers will respond to a thoughtful partnership proposal.
Higher Engagement - Smaller accounts get 5-10% engagement while mega-influencers get 1-2%. Higher engagement means more people see and act on recommendations.
Trust Factor - To their audience they feel like trusted friends, not celebrities. When your mate with 2K followers recommends a tool, you listen.
Audience Alignment - Incredibly niche, targeted audiences. A consultant helping coaches has exactly who might need your coaching tool. Mega influencers rarely have a tight focused audience, just because often the audiences don’t exist at that scale!
Long-term Relationships - More likely to become genuine ongoing partners, especially if your affiliate deal pays out well for them. Heck, for some of them it might be the first $ they get from their content!
Commission Strategy: Go Mental Early Days
So…how much to give away?
I might seem made here. But consider giving away up to 100% commission early days. You get a $30/month subscription, you give the affiliate $30 a month.
Are you mad?? Why give it all away? Growth! The more you incentivise them, the more they'll push. The more users you get, the more momentum. The more word of mouth, the more referrals. You just cover more ground.
Growth, exposure and momentum basically open doors. Doors that are hard to predict early on. And we can engineer all that momentum by being overly generous with early affiliates.
Think of this as marketing cost straight through to affiliates. Instead of chucking cash at Facebook for adverts you are paying it through to affiliates and, even better, you pay it from revenues coming in! So it’s derisked marketing spend.
This is a very aggressive route but worth considering.
Otherwise, if you want to be boring (fine, sensible..) 30-50% is relatively normal - lets you make money and reinvest into growth.
Also obviously your product is physical or has a cost to deliver then bake that into the commissions and decrease the %. You should not lose money on an affiliate sale. You want to be fully aligned - their success is your success.
Technical Implementation: Start Manual
OK let’s get this built out. A couple of stages today. As always work these prompts step by step.
Keep this simple and manual for now. Basically affiliate links which trigger and ascribe sales, then you do payouts manually. You can set up Stripe connections and auto payouts later - that's more advanced stuff. We don’t want to (or need to!) touch that yet.
Here’s a prompt to get started with the basic affiliate system:
Help me build a simple manual affiliate tracking system. Built upon my existing tracking and analytics systems.
AFFILIATE LINK GENERATION:
- Create unique tracking links for each affiliate: yoursite.com/?aff=partner-name
- When someone visits these links, capture the 'aff' parameter
- Store affiliate attribution in existing traffic_sources table
- Track all signups and purchases back to the affiliate who referred them
SALES TRACKING:
- When a purchase happens, check if there's affiliate attribution
- Calculate commission based on sale amount and agreed percentage. Ask me for the % breakdowns.
- Log commission owed in affiliate_commissions table
- Flag for manual payout processing
BASIC TRACKING TABLES:
- affiliates: partner info, commission rate, contact details, status
- affiliate_commissions: sale_id, affiliate_id, commission_amount, payout_status
- Integration with existing analytics
Keep it simple - manual payouts, basic tracking, no automation complexity.
This will help you get the basics in play. It’s really an extension of our previous tracking system but for affiliate links. We are going to add a few more elements though.
Affiliate Dashboard with Partner Resources
Unlike our previous systems we need a way for our affiliates to see what’s going on. This is because money is in play so we need transparency. We want to build an Affiliate Dashboard. Basically a place where they can login and see their link’s usage.
Create an affiliate dashboard with transparency and partner resources:
AFFILIATE DASHBOARD ACCESS:
- Simple login for each affiliate partner, create affiliate user role
- Personal dashboard showing their performance stats
- Real-time data on clicks, signups, sales, commissions
PERFORMANCE TRANSPARENCY:
- Clicks on their affiliate links (daily, weekly, monthly)
- Signups generated through their links
- Sales and commission earned
- Conversion rates for their traffic
PARTNER RESOURCES SECTION:
Add a dashboard section for resources that I will upload such as
- Download high-quality product graphics and screenshots
- Copy-paste social media templates and email templates
- Product information sheets and talking points
- Success stories and testimonials they can reference
- Video assets or promotional materials
- Brand guidelines and usage requirements
Create an uploader interface for Admin accounts to add this material for affiliate accounts to access and download.
Again, work step by step, testing and iteratively improving.
Notice I’ve also had the instructions add a Resources section. This is where you can add marketing materials for your affiliates. We want to make their job of marketing you as simple as possible. So we do the work for them!
We now need some partner resources!
Partner Resources Creation
Thankfully we can also use AI to hep us put together the resources for our affiliates. Use this below work you’ve done on the offer, for example working on the sales page. Or bring that information over into the chat as required.
Help me create a complete affiliate marketing resource package:
PRODUCT INFORMATION PACKAGE:
- Clear value proposition in simple language affiliates can use
- Key benefits and specific outcomes customers achieve
- Exact problems the product solves with real examples
- Ideal customer profile and use cases
- Pricing information and any special offers for their audience
READY-TO-USE MARKETING MATERIALS:
- High-quality product screenshots and graphics (various sizes)
- Social media post templates for Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn
- Email templates affiliates can customise for their lists
- Blog post outlines with key talking points
- Short video script templates for reviews or demos
COMPELLING COPY LIBRARY:
- Proven headlines that convert well
- Product descriptions in multiple lengths (tweet, paragraph, detailed)
- Benefits-focused copy explaining value, not just features
- Strong call-to-action templates that drive clicks
- Answers to common objections or concerns
SOCIAL PROOF AND CREDIBILITY:
- Customer testimonials affiliates can quote or reference
- Specific case studies with real results and numbers
- Usage statistics, customer count, or impressive metrics
- Before/after examples if applicable
- Awards, certifications, or media mentions
PROMOTION BEST PRACTICES:
- Guidelines for effective product promotion
- When and where to share affiliate links for best results
- Legal disclosure requirements and compliance guidelines
- Tips for improving conversion rates
- Examples of successful affiliate content from top performers
Create a complete toolkit that removes all barriers to effective promotion.
This will generate the core resources. Copy paste or export out into Notion documents or Canva templates to make them look nice. Or send off to a designer to have them professionally prepared.

Without having to spend hundreds a month on professional tools!
Bootstrap growth ecosystem complete - and no ads needed!"
Week 8 Wrap-Up: The Bootstrap Growth Trinity
You've built something beautiful this week - three growth methods that work in perfect harmony, each strengthening the others:
Customer Referrals are your foundation. These are fans who love your product and naturally mention it. You've made it easier for them to share and rewarded them when they do. They provide the social proof and initial traction.
Content Features build your authority and reach new audiences. Every podcast, newsletter, or blog feature positions you as an expert worth listening to. This credibility makes affiliate partnerships more attractive and gives referrers social proof to share. And the people you work with will link back to your work, opening up another traffic channel.
Affiliate Partnerships create your distributed sales team. Micro-influencers actively promote your product to audiences that trust their recommendations. This scales your reach beyond your existing customers and one-time content features.
The real win here is how these three no-money required marketing methods will feed into one another. A customer referral might discover you through an affiliate link. Someone who heard you on a podcast might become your strongest affiliate. An affiliate's promotion might lead to a content feature opportunity. It’s all in play now.
And beautifully you can see what’s working!
What's Next?
Week 9 focuses on direct sales mastery - converting all this partnership-generated interest into revenue. You'll learn pricing strategies, objection handling, and closing techniques that turn conversations into customers.
Keep Prompting,
Kyle
