Last week I talked about Lovable in my these guides and on social media in my lives. Not being they are paying me. But because it’s great.
And, when I remember to at least, I will give people my referral code and both the person I refer and myself get free credits. Cool stuff.
The referral program just makes it easier for me to help them and rewards me for something I was doing anyway.
That's the magic of referrals done right. You're not asking people to become salespeople - you're making it easier for your fans to help others and saying thank you when they do.

What Referrals Actually Are (And Why They're Different)
Customer referrals are fundamentally different from the affiliate partnerships we'll cover on Friday. These are your fans - people who already love your product and naturally mention it in conversations. Some of them will be the champions we worked with during beta launch.
You're not asking them to become marketers; you're making it easier for them to help people they know and saying thank you when they do.
The key insight is avoiding cash rewards.
When you pay people money for referrals, it becomes transactional.
They start thinking like salespeople instead of helpful friends. But when you reward them with something related to your product - extra credits, premium features, exclusive access - it feels like a bonus gift for being awesome.
Take Lovable's referral system as a perfect example, as mentioned above.
Here's how it works:
Share your invite link with someone who needs to build an app
They sign up and get extra 10 credits to try the platform
You get 10 credits once they publish their first website
Brilliant system. Both parties get more of what they already value (platform credits), nobody feels like they're buying or selling, and Lovable rewards existing users for helping grow their community. Win, win, win.
And importantly it’s not about cash. As soon as cash enters the equation it becomes a different game. We’ll cover that Friday.
Also this approach converts at much higher rates because the trust transfer feels natural. When someone recommends a tool they genuinely use and love, it doesn't feel like marketing. They aren’t getting paid to tell you this so you can trust their advice more.
Working Out Your Referral Rewards
The key is offering something valuable that relates to your product, not cash. Credits, extra usage, premium features, or exclusive access work much better than money because they feel like gifts rather than payments.
There are lots of ways you can referrers so let’s get ideas flowing with a prompt:

- What percentage of my customer value should rewards represent?
- How do I balance referrer rewards vs new customer incentives?
- What reward level motivates sharing without breaking my economics?
- Should rewards scale with number of successful referrals?
**REFEREE INCENTIVES:**
- What should new customers get for using a referral link?
- How do I make the referral valuable for the person being referred?
- Should referee rewards be different from referrer rewards?
**REWARD EXAMPLES FOR MY BUSINESS:**
Generate 3-5 specific reward structures that would work for my business model, including exact reward amounts and qualification criteria.
This will get you started but you’ll need to be smart to work out the best rewards. Also be careful of overcomplicating it. Easiest will be credits or usage. Maybe content. Maybe a 1:1 call with you?
Work with the AI back and forth rather than taking first option.
Technical Implementation
Once you’ve landed on some basic rewards let’s build the structure around what youve decided. We’re going to build the actual referral system. This extends yesterday's analytics foundation with referral-specific tracking while maintaining the modular approach.
Help me build a referral system in Lovable that extends yesterday's analytics foundation:
BUSINESS CONTEXT: [Your business and the reward structure you designed above]
EXTEND EXISTING SYSTEM:
- Add referral tables that integrate with existing users/traffic_sources/revenue tables
- Generate unique referral codes linked to customer accounts
- Track referral relationships through existing attribution system
- Calculate rewards automatically based on [your specific reward structure]
- Display referral performance in main dashboard alongside other traffic sources
REFERRAL SYSTEM FEATURES:
- Personal referral link generator for each customer
- Tracking when referral links are clicked and conversions happen
- Automatic reward delivery when qualification criteria are met
- Customer dashboard showing their referral activity and earned rewards
CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE:
- Easy way for customers to find and share their referral link
- Clear explanation of how rewards work and when they're delivered
- Simple sharing tools (email templates, social copy suggestions)
- Reward redemption or automatic delivery system
INTEGRATION REQUIREMENTS:
- Referral signups flow through existing traffic_sources tracking
- Referral conversions connect to existing sales attribution
- Referral LTV tracking integrates with existing revenue analysis
- ROI comparison with other growth methods in unified dashboard
Build this as an extension of yesterday's foundation, not a separate system. Make access from my admin panel easy.
Work through this step by step with me, checking functionality along the way.
Again this is a chunky task so take your time and make sure each step works before pushing ahead.
You can also use third party tools like Rewardful. If doing so just talk to Lovable about how to integrate it and you’ll be able to move faster (but obviously at a price!)
Kickstarting Your Referral Program
OK we’ve got the basics in play.
The prompt above has also built your referral system into your product. For example adding references in the menus, user dashboard etc. so that they know it exists. That will get you a trickle over time.
These people will probably be your early champions again. So, yay, we get to go back to them and offer them something cool (for free). They can get more credits, or whatever reward you settled upon, simply by continuing to tell people about your product. Slick
