Once during a launch I was talking to a mentor and he asked the (seemingly!) most obvious question: so where do most of your sales come from?
Easy question right? Well…no. In our rush I hadn’t set up our systems properly. And the problem with data collection is you have to have them set up before people start arriving…
It’s kinda like handing out customer satisfaction surveys after someone has left the shop. They’re already gone. You’re not getting their info! It’s too late.
Same for me - I just didn’t have eyes-on what worked and where the sales came from. Embarrassing!
Before implementing any growth methods, you need a solid foundation to track what actually works. We’ll build out the foundation today and add to it over the week.

Why Foundation-First Matters
Most people build tracking as an afterthought. They launch referral programs, start affiliate partnerships, appear on podcasts, then try to figure out what's working. By then, it's too late to capture clean attribution data. Oopsie.
This week you're building the foundation first, then adding modules for each growth method. We’ll add tracking for referrals, content and affiliates over the next couple of days.
The goal isn't massively complex analytics. It’s easy to go down a rabbit hole here (and there are very advanced tools that you can purchase that allow you to do so). We just need to know what traffic sources are turning into sales - that’s sorta it for now!
The Full Funnel Foundation
Your analytics foundation needs to track the complete journey from first visit to long-term customer value. Here's what we're building:
Lead Source Attribution captures where every visitor comes from. Not just "social media" but specific referral codes, UTM parameters, and partner links. When someone lands on your site, you know exactly which growth method brought them.
Landing Conversion Tracking measures how many visitors become leads or free users. Different sources convert at different rates. A podcast appearance might drive 100 visitors with 2% conversion, while a customer referral might drive 5 visitors with 60% conversion. You need both volume and conversion data.
Free to Paid Conversion tracks which sources drive actual customers, not just leads. Some growth methods attract lookers, others attract buyers. A micro-influencer's audience might convert at 15% while a generic podcast appearance converts at 2%. This data completely changes your partnership strategy.
Lifetime Value Calculation shows the long-term revenue per customer by source. Some customers stick around and upgrade, others churn quickly. The affiliate who sends customers with £500 lifetime value is more valuable than the one who sends customers with £50 lifetime value, even if they send fewer people.
OK there’s a LOT here! But thankfully we can build this out using Lovable.
Database Foundation Architecture
We're going to keep using Lovable + Supabase. Here's the foundation structure:
Traffic Sources Table captures all incoming traffic with complete attribution data. Every visitor gets a source record with UTM parameters, referral codes, and timestamp. This connects to everything else.
Users Table links back to traffic sources so you always know where each user originated. No matter when they convert - immediately or three months later - you maintain attribution.
Conversions Table tracks each step of your funnel with source attribution. Lead conversion, trial conversion, paid conversion, upgrades. Each event connects back to the original traffic source.
Revenue Table links all purchases back to traffic sources with lifetime value calculation. You can see total revenue by source, average order value, and customer lifetime value.
This foundation supports the modules you'll add later this week. Referral tracking plugs into traffic sources. Affiliate commissions calculate from revenue data. Content feature performance flows through the same attribution system.
