Prompt Playbook: Bootstrapping Growth Without Cash

I’m streaming AI news and updateslive Monday to Friday — across all social platforms. Subscribe to YouTube for the best experience.

Hey Prompt Entrepreneur,

We’ve reached the point where normally I'd say "Right, time to turn on adverts and test what works!"

But I'm instead going to assume you're in full bootstrap mode - no ad budget, no existing audience to leverage. Most growth advice assumes you've got one or the other, but what if you've got neither? That’s fine! We just need to get smart.

That's exactly where peer-to-peer growth comes in. Instead of building or buying audiences, you borrow them.

We are going to leverage other people’s audiences this week. I’m taking you through three proven methods that work without cash or followers.

Let's get started:

Summary

Borrow

  • Three free growth methods

  • Foundations first

  • Growth research prompt

Three Free Growth Methods

Good thing this is written not a video - I mix up my F’s and Th’s so three free would definitely trip me up! I blame growing up in South (Sarf) London rather than my lisp…

Over this week I’ll show you three different methods. The beautiful thing about all of them is that they aren’t about competition with companies who have massive marketing budgets. Instead we assume zero budget and get creative.

We work with the market. You're playing a completely different game - one based on relationships and genuine value exchange rather than who can outspend whom.

Here are the three methods we’ll cover:

Customer referrals are your warmest possible leads. These are people who've experienced your product, understand the value, and have personal networks who trust their recommendations.

The conversion rates here will be the highest you - often 3-5x higher than cold marketing because the trust transfer is immediate.

We’re going to set up a referral system as well as a system of “rewards” so that our current users and customers can help find new users and customers for us.

Getting featured and collaborations position you as someone worth interviewing, quoting, or featuring in other people's content. One podcast appearance or guest article can reach more people than months of organic posting.

You're borrowing established audiences who already trust the content creator. We’re just getting in front of their audience by making an exchange. We help them to get content (ie. an interview, video, article) and in exchange they put us in front of their audience.

Affiliate partnerships get influencers to actively promote your product to their audiences in exchange for commissions. We’ll start with “micro-influencers” with 1K-10K followers because they often have higher engagement than mega-influencers and are infinitely more accessible for newer businesses.

The magic really happens when these three methods work together. Content features build authority that makes affiliate partnerships more attractive. Affiliate partnerships create scale beyond your existing customer base. And those new customers can refer others. Etc. etc. All of them interact with each other.

Often there’s overlap too. For example you might go on someone’s podcast and then make them an affiliate. The more they push that episode to their audience and your tool the more money they make.

Most importantly, you don't need your own audience or advertising budget to start any of these. You're offering value - expertise, product benefits, commission opportunities - in exchange for access to audiences that already exist and trust other people.

The Foundation-First Approach

This week follows a strategic build order because you want unified tracking across all three methods. We need this so that we know what’s working and what’s not. So we’re combining this week with “analytics” as a whole - tracking visits, sign ups, purchases, lifetime value and more.

By Friday, you'll have a complete growth ecosystem where you can compare the ROI of getting a customer referral versus appearing on a podcast versus landing an affiliate partner. This data then tells you where to focus your limited time for maximum growth. Which in turn will let us scale. We like that word: scale!

Here’s the basic rundown:

  • Day 37 (tomorrow): Build analytics foundation that tracks all three methods in one dashboard

  • Day 38: Add referral tracking module and launch customer referral program

  • Day 39: Add content feature tracking and start outreach for podcast/blog features

  • Day 40: Add affiliate commission module and begin micro-influencer partnerships

For each step I’ll show you how to vibe code in the feature yourself and provide third party integrations if you want to skip the technical stuff. Third party is fine but be aware there will be costs. I’ll provide the options so you can choose!

AI Prompt for Bootstrap Growth Research

Before we kick off let’s get some research done. I’m giving you the skeleton but you need to fill it in (with…muscles?? flesh? Gross) with the specifics of your niche.

Use this prompt ideally with an AI agent so it can go into more depth. We’ll be referring to the report over the week. Feed in as much information about your business as possible - ask for summaries from your previous AI work for this.

Act as a bootstrap growth researcher helping me build a comprehensive peer-to-peer growth strategy. Create a detailed research report covering all three growth methods for my business:

BUSINESS CONTEXT: [Describe your business, target customers, price point, current customer count]

RESEARCH AREAS TO COVER:

**CUSTOMER REFERRAL RESEARCH:**
- Industry standard referral reward structures in [your industry]
- What referral gifts/incentives work best for [your price point]
- Successful referral program examples from similar businesses
- Timing strategies: when to ask customers for referrals
- Common referral program mistakes to avoid
- Tools and platforms other businesses use for referral tracking

**CONTENT FEATURE OPPORTUNITIES:**
- Podcasts that interview entrepreneurs in [your niche] (include audience size, contact info)
- Newsletters covering [your industry] that accept contributors
- Blogs publishing guest content related to [your topic]
- Industry round-ups and expert quote opportunities
- Conference speaking opportunities (virtual and in-person)
- Social media accounts that feature entrepreneur stories

**AFFILIATE PARTNERSHIP RESEARCH:**
- Standard commission rates in [your industry]
- Micro-influencers (1K-10K followers) whose audience matches [your target customer]
- Affiliate program structures used by successful companies in your space
- What resources/tools affiliates need to promote effectively
- Common affiliate onboarding and management practices
- Platforms and tools for affiliate tracking and payments

**COMPETITIVE INTELLIGENCE:**
- How do similar businesses in [your niche] approach growth without ads? Find specific examples for me to emulate.
- What partnership strategies are your competitors using?
- Which podcasts/blogs feature businesses like yours?
- What referral programs exist in adjacent industries you could model?

Create a comprehensive report with specific names, contact information, benchmark data, and actionable recommendations.

Use agent mode or multiple prompt iterations to get comprehensive research! This is a big task so don’t expect it to be one-shot. Instead start broad, then ask follow-up questions to dig deeper into specific areas that look promising. You’re an AI pro by this point so you know this! This is just a gentle reminder that we don’t just switch our brains off.

Your Day 36 Deliverable

Generate your comprehensive bootstrap growth research report using the prompt above. This becomes your reference document for the entire week

This research prevents you from guessing about referral rewards, commission rates, and outreach targets. You'll make informed decisions based on industry benchmarks and proven strategies. Keep hold of your report as we’ll be dipping into it over the rest of this week.

Build in Public Content

"Day 36 of AI Summer Camp: Instead of turning on ads, I'm building a bootstrap growth ecosystem.

Three methods that work without budget: customer referrals, getting featured, and affiliate partnerships. Just done some comprehensive research on industry benchmarks, potential partners, and successful program structures. Basically what the other people are doing.

Tomorrow: building the analytics foundation to track what actually works. No longer flying blind - going to get some proper data."

What's Next?

Tomorrow you build the analytics foundation that makes everything else possible. You'll create a tracking system that captures traffic sources, attribution, and conversions across all three growth methods.

We will not be building an all singing all dancing 360 degree analytics package. We don’t need it. But we do need to know - it's about knowing which methods drive real results so you can double down on what works and stop wasting time on what doesn't.

Keep Prompting,

Kyle
