AI with Kyle Daily Update 026

Today in AI: GPT-5 Chaos

The skinny on what's happening in AI - straight from the previous live session:

Highlights

🔥 GPT-5 is Here

OpenAI dropped GPT-5 late last week in their usual shoddy college-presentation style. They've killed off every other model - 4o, o3, 4.5 - the lot. Now there's just GPT-5, and they're giving it to free users too.

Kyle's take: Phew!

A LOT to cover and it’s all evolving fast.

I gave a first full impression: Kyle talks about GPT-5 and I’m sure I’ll be talking about it all week. I’ll be on at 10AM London time today on the Live discussing and taking questions btw - live can be found at Youtube- AI with Kyle

The long and short of it though:

  • It’s good. Especially at coding. There, I said it! (this is a very unpopular opinion right now)

  • The problems arise because we can no longer choose our model. So sometimes we are routed to the best model in the world, sometimes a mode that is worse than 4o.

  • This model routing randomness gives the impression that it’s bad. And it is…sometimes! Which is incredibly frustrating.

  • Lots of people were very attached to 4o and are furious it’s been taken away (it has also be returned as a Legacy model for paying users FYI).

  • BUT….most of ChatGPT’s 700 millions users will not care. For them it’s an upgrade. One that they may not even have noticed they’ve got! Remember that we are in a bubble of AI enthusiasts who pay close attention to this! Most are not.

📱 Gmail Integration: Convenience or Privacy Nightmare?

ChatGPT now hooks into Gmail and Google Calendar. It can read your emails, schedule meetings, act as your personal assistant. Google basically handed their ecosystem advantage to their biggest competitor.

Kyle's take: This was entirely overshadowed by the GPT-5 controversy. But it’s very cool - it allows ChatGPT to genuinely become an assistant because it knows your schedule.

Weird move from Google because this is one of their (few) trump cards in AI adoption - hooking into the Google ecosystem. But a massive win for users if you trust OpenAI with your entire digital life. I'd wait a few days before connecting - let someone else figure out the privacy implications first!

Oh, and if you're running a business, definitely don't give ChatGPT access to client emails without proper legal review. Disaster waiting to happen.
